CAPATAIN COOK CRUISES – RENMARK CRUISES

Captain Cook Cruises announces one off Renmark Cruises on The Murray River
Join Captain Cook on board PS Murray Princess for their unique seven night Renmark Cruise. The Renmark cruise takes in over 420kms of The Murray River, passing thru 5 locks from Mannum to Renmark which is near the Victoria border. Following in the wake of the great 19th century pioneers, negotiating massive sandbars, hidden reefs and submerged forests on a unique journey through five locks between Mannum and Renmark along the Murray River.

The Renmark cruise only occurs when river conditions are right and will operate in the true spirit of our pioneering forefathers. They make no guarantee of arriving at their nominated destinations however it’s the unknown challenges that make this voyage one of the great river adventures. Succeed or fail  in reaching the destination you will have a whole lot of fun and adventure
Some interesting facts about the River Murray. It is 2530 km long from the Snowy Mountains on the New South Wales- Victoria border to the Southern Ocean in South Australia. The head waters comprise less than 2% of the Murray- Darling basin, but contribute nearly 40% of the inflow to the Murray River. The flow in the Murray is very low by world standards. Its annual average flow would pass through the Amazon in less than a day. The Murray like the Darling also has a highly variable flow and in the early 1900’s construction of locks and weirs began and the result is a more regulated river

Is there water on the Murray?
The answer is overwhelmingly YES!

Recently there has been a great deal of media coverage regarding the drought and water levels on the Murray/Darling River system. PS Murray Princess has been operating on the Murray River since 1987 and the ship has seen many floods and droughts. Our Captain and Crew have first hand knowledge of the river and its environs.  Despite the current conditions PS Murray Princess continues to cruise to our current itinerary between Murray Bridge and Swan Reach and we do not foresee any change to this itinerary in the coming months. Below is the latest report, direct from our Captain Peter Hunter  and crew  on the Murray River..

November 2010

Flooding rains over Victoria and New South Wales have filled the Lower Lakes of the Murray River, downstream of the Murray Princess, allowing the first significant releases through the Murray Mouth since 2006.
The river levels at Mannum are now 1.75 metres higher than they were at their lowest level eighteen months ago.
The Murray Princess crew are celebrating and river enthusiasts are flocking to the river to see the river return to its mighty state. Jackie Charlton, Joint Managing Director has just returned from Mannum. "You can feel the excitement all along the river, in the people and the wildlife - there's a vibrancy that only flood waters bring."
Prolific birdlife, and thriving new forest growth is giving passengers a positive and exciting experience of the Murray River ecosystem.  We welcome the opportunity to continue to give our guests this "must see" cruise experience of Australia's heartland.
So, take this opportunity to see the river during this exciting period. It's an opportunity to compare it to the drought period if you have cruised with us during that time.
Don't take our word for it - take a well deserved break and check it out for yourself!
Captain Cook has just released its revised E Ticket info with 4 & 7-night itineraries  amended to a high water itinerary which includes cruising through Lock 1.
